3 reasons why a balanced skin pH is important

April 28, 2018

The skin is the largest organ in the human body. It's main function is not what you might consider most important now - to be beautiful and glowing, but also to protect us from harmful outside factors, such as bacteria and yeast. Every day our skin is exposed to different environmental conditions - the wind, the sun, the pollution in the cities and so on. Not only that, but we make it even harder for the skin to protect us from bacteria by unknowingly destroying the outer layer called the mantel. The mantel's pH is between 4,5 and 6,2. It's role is to act as a barrier to bacteria, viruses and other potential contaminants that might penetrate the skin. How do we do that? By using the wrong skincare for our skin type, by using harsh soaps or abrasive exfoliants, when not necessary or by thinking oil for oily skin is a no-no. If we are inconsiderate of all of the above and unkind to that protective layer of the skin, we invite problems into our life.

What does all of that mean simply? Having an out of balance skin pH can lead to dryness, scaling and not  very pleasant bacterial infections. So, the 3 top reasons to care for our skin's pH are:

1) Balanced pH protects us from bacteria and yeast.

2) It gives is healthy, glowing skin.

3) A balanced pH makes skin more resilient to weather conditions and dryness.

How do we make sure we have a balanced, healthy skin then, you may ask.

Well, by making sure we are kind to it and give it what it needs, which is mainly cleansing, moisturising and toning. The last step is particularly important in that it calms the skin down and prepares it to rest and regenerate after it has been exposed to make-up, environmental conditions and harsh (sometimes) cleansing from all the impurities at the end of the day. The toner tones it, freshens it up and hydrates it.

How do we make sure you use a nice, gentle toner on our face? When we buy a product like this, make need to make sure we read the ingredients on the labels. We don't want to see any alcohol included, because that dries the skin. Our best bet is a pure floral water. We also want to make sure what we buy is not loaded with fragrance, essential oils, and preservatives. Our aim needs to be for a floral distillate instead - the purest form of floral water. This means that our water has been obtained by distillation of rose petals, in the case of the Floral Beauty Mist. Using such a clean product guarantees us obtaining maximum benefit from the qualities of the botanical extract of choice.

I hope this post is really informative and useful to you. I remember, when I first found out about the importance of a balanced skin pH a few years ago, I felt liberated. It was like my eyes have been opened after a very long sleep. I found that looking after my skin can much more simple and pleasurable from what I used to think. Hopefully it feels the same way to you too! Let me know. I'm happy to receive feedback on the information we share here and the products we create and offer with much love.
